J Hoar, Master of the Upnor (built 1899)

Post by tom_mahon » Fri Mar 27, 2020 1:18 am

Hi,

I'd be grateful for any information on the naval store ship Upnor (built by McArthur of Paisley, 1899). In 1922 the ship's master was J Hoar. Any information on the ship, officers or crew from 1922 would be most welcome.

Best wishes and stay safe.

There are a couple of entries on the UPNOR in the RN warship/auxiliaries built on Clyde sub-section but while I'm getting the headings the actual actual message isn't appearing

Thanks Colin,

Looking at the photo do you think she was painted black or dark grey? She was called NAV Upnor, what does NAV stand for?

Sorry Tom,

RN knowledge very limited. During WW2 Navy had numerous little coasters built based on Clyde Puffers and gave them simple names like VIC followed by a numeral. In those cases the VIC I believe stood for Victualing Inshore Craft so perhaps (guessing) something like Naval A??? Vessel or even just.... Naval.
Looks like black hull......ship in background looks more like battleship grey. Keep Safe. Colin

Thanks Colin

I'm beginning to get a pretty good overview of the Upnor.

Regards, Tom
